10 Stannington Avenue HEATHPOOL

Inter-War Old English 'Stockbroker's Tudor'
This flamboyant house is an eye-catching element in the streetscape and contributes significantly to the dominant 1920's-1930's character of Stannington Avenue.

A large complex single-storey Inter-War Old English ("Stockbroker's Tudor") red brick dwelling with multi-gable red tiled roof.

Notable for its complex roof and plan form, "Tudor" panelling and timber detailing. Reflects a fashion in the 1930's for houses to have 'strong visual imagery' suggestive of the Tudor style.

470 Magill Road KENSINGTON GARDENS
This is a freestone house in the tudor fashion, with attractive gable work and matching wall. The Tudor design delighted in the use of clinker bricks and in matching fences like that of 470 Magill Road (now demolished - compare 1986 and 2018 illustrations).

The development of the new housing estates of Toorak Gardens and Springfield entailed strict design standards which suited a preference for English vernacular revival styles.
Toorak Gardens attracted a steady stream of business and professional people all eager for the new styles of Californian bungalow and Tudor, and rejecting the previous favourite of the gentlemen's returned verandah (Federation) villa.
From the late 1920s and throughout the 1930s the Tudor style re-appeared as a decorative accessory to the basic bungalow design and is easily distinguished by the high pitched roof, steep gables and more or less ornate chimneys.
The Tudor delighted in the use of clinker bricks as shown by 51 West Terrace, in matching fences like that of 470 Magill Road and could accommodate two stories as at 344 Glynburn Road.
Two red brick, Federation styled houses on triangular blocks opposite Attunga are signature examples of picturesque design and siting by Architect Eric Phillipps Danker.
Marryatville is a remarkably consistent suburb of Californian and Tudor style bungalows with few intrusive elements. Indeed there is one precinct which has such a high concentration of Tudor bungalows that the cumulative effect is a powerful statement of the dominant architectural preferences of the 1930s.
This precinct is bounded by Greenhill Road to the south and encompasses all of Burke and Kennaway Streets and the southernmost blocks along Brandreth and Lynington Streets.
Designated a local heritage area it deserves particular care from the council and its residents as its impact and value lie in the retention of such high numbers of Tudor bungalows which have undergone little or no alteration and each of which reinforces the overall character.

'Duncraig' & Stables State Heritage #13510
Built in 1901 for W H Duncan, MP, a highly successful pastoralist, the former Duncraig illustrates residential development in North Adelaide that is associated with the well-to-do and the desire of pastoralists to have a town address.
It was later the home of WGT Goodman, General Manager of the Municipal Tramways Trust and first Chairman of the SA Housing Trust.
An example of Australian Victorian Tudor, the use of limestone rubble at this late date is distinctive, particularly when associated with brickwork of high quality.

Heritage listed for its external form, materials and detailing of the c1930 dwelling.
An Inter War Tudor style residence with steeply pitched terracotta tiled roof and pillow faced sandstone with projecting gabled roofs.
The house retains timber framed windows and doors. There is a verandah under the main roof.

Confirmed as a State Heritage Place in the SA Heritage Register
A rare example of the 1910s large scale Tudor/Bungalow design. It was designed by Albert Selmar Conrad and is noteworthy for its good construction detail, irregular plan and roof form.
A substantial, single storey house set within a large walled garden. The house, which is in the English Domestic Revival style, is constructed of rock-faced sandstone. It has a complex roof form that is clad with Marseilles tiles, with steeply pitched gables over an irregular plan form. The wall surfaces are articulated and the verandahs are deeply recessed. The interior is well executed and shows the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement.
HISTORY: This house was erected in circa 1919 for William George Pryor, a pastoralist. It was designed by Albert Selmer Conrad, an Adelaide architect.

This house is an excellent example of an Inter-War Old English revival style residence.
It retains important stylistic elements including roughcast rendered brick walls, steeply pitched terracotta tiled roof, and some reference to Elizabethan/Tudor architectural details such as tall chimneys.
This style of house was constructed as infill development as town acres were further subdivided between the wars. This house remains an important indication of the type of residences constructed at that time, and evidence of the use of new styles of domestic architecture during this period.
STATEMENT OF HERITAGE VALUE: This house is an important example of the Inter-War Old English revival style of residences constructed in North Adelaide during the 1920s- 1930s, and reflects the design, details and building materials commonly in use at that time.

This house is a good example of an Inter-War Old English revival style residence. It retains important stylistic elements including roughcast rendered brick walls, steeply pitched terracotta tiled roof.
This style of house was constructed as infill development as town acres were further subdivided between the wars. This house remains an important indication of the type of residences constructed at that time, and evidence of the use of new styles of domestic architecture during this period.

61-71 Wellington Square NORTH ADELAIDE
Enchanting English Manor style residence with views of Wellington Square, heritage listing includes materials and detailing of the c1920s Inter-War Tudor revival style dwelling, including the fence to Austral Terrace.
This house is an excellent example of an Inter-War Old English style residence. It retains important stylistic elements including steeply pitched roof form and rendered walls with gable ends and a masonry verandah porch.
An application to build a dwelling on this site was made by TS Shearer in July 1927. The contractor was John McDonough who also built the residences at 41 and 55 Wellington Square in the same period.

114 Hewitt Avenue TOORAK GARDENS
Architect F.W. Dancker designed and built the well preserved residence at 114 Hewitt Avenue, described in The Register as "of attractive English design, with tiled roof, deep verandah, artistic windows, with pretty outside wooden shutters, and a particularly quaint and pleasing entrance porch."

Architect F.W. Dancker designed and built his beautifully crafted home at 138 Watson Avenue in 1910, heritage listed for its external form and fabric of this two storey 1910 Old English style residence.
Key features include terracotta tiled roof, tall face red brick chimneys and face red brick lower walls sections and upper wall sections of rendered masonry.

Trefresa, 16 Victoria Avenue Unley Park
Built between April 1919 and November 1920. The contractor's work included providing a hot water service, electricity and power, and a tennis court enclosure.
When number 16 Victoria Avenue, (noted as the estate of Mrs Glen Legoe), was auctioned in October 1938, it was described as 'English in design ... adapted to our climate by spacious verandahs and balcony'.
Local Heritage listed for: External form, materials and detailing of the c1920 Inter-War Bungalow dwelling and front fence.
