Lugano, one of the great houses of Melbourne's inner north, is one of the rich stories of residential Melbourne.
Built by Lawrence Edwards in 1912, the glorious elevation here is noteworthy on its own – the city skyline barely interrupted – but it’s the interiors that leave you awestruck.

While the foyer’s columned archway is a suitably stunning introduction, you only have to jag left where bedroom one immediately ups the ante.
It’s here you see the first of the incredible pressed metal ceilings. This one – Four Seasons – has cherub cameos each representing a different time of year. Then there’s the superb leadlight bay window with city views, and the lovely timber overmantle.
It keeps getting more remarkable as you go beyond the arch to the fine timber study and then two further bedrooms, the main showcasing a lovely tulip motif ceiling and excellent en suite.
The restored showpiece on the crest of Ruckers Hill had changed hands just five times since it was built in 1912.
At the time of the sale, Brace Real Estate’s Julian Butera said the home had long been regarded as the jewel in Northcote’s crown.
“It’s in a league of its own and vastly incomparable to anything else we’ve ever seen before,” Mr Butera said.
Retired food and mining industry boss Don Taig had finally sold his century-old Northcote home — to a couple who live just a few houses away.
Online marketing consultant Linh Trinh and his fiancee Keri bought Lugano, atop Ruckers Hill at 215 Clarke St, for an undisclosed price.
Jellis Craig, Fitzroy, selling agent Sam Rigopoulos had been quoting $3.5-$3.85 million for the property since it was relisted in February, after failing to sell during an auction campaign last year.
Mr Taig meticulously restored the 1912 Federation-style house to its original condition after purchasing it in 1990, with CoreLogic records showing he paid $610,000.
Both Lugano and neighbour Mandalay houses are notable and substantially intact examples of the Queen Anne style in Northcote, and are distinctive for their elevated siting, picturesque composition and mirror image plans.

The $10.75 million buyer of the Bellevue Hill mansion owned by Jodee Rich’s family for close to 40 years has been revealed as property fund manager Ben Finger.

Ben Finger is the son of architect Harold Finger OAM, and the father-and-son team are principals in the Haben Property Team.
