Queen Anne total renovations

Updated: Sep 21, 2019

Here are three (actually four) elegant, spacious, and totally renovated Federation Queen Anne houses at the top end of their streets, in NSW, Victoria, and South Australia.

Federation charm outside, but totally contemporary finishes inside. Some renovations are more faithful to their period than others - why don't you decide which is most successful?

Restored Gordon estate comes to market:

Mandalay, 32 Nelson Street, Gordon, NSW

One of the upper north shore’s most prized estates has come to market, and is tipped to smash both its suburb and district record.

Mandalay, as it is known, has undergone a massive, multimillion-dollar restoration and renovation since it was bought about 10 years ago by Geoff and Jane Selig. This grand Federation Queen Anne-style residence has now been listed with price expectations of about $14.5 million.

The seller, Mr Selig told the North Shore Times the home was in desperate need of renovation when he and his wife bought it in July, 2009.

“When we bought it 10 years a go it had beautiful, beautiful bones, but it was a wreck,” he said.

“The first time we walked in our knees started to wobble at the prospect of the renovation.”

What about a pretty Federation house in Killara?

Mooralbeek, 29 Stanhope Road, Killara NSW 2071

Delivering both 'Mooralbeek', a five-bedroom arts and crafts home, AND a four-bedroom contemporary build on an enormous 3503-square-metre land parcel, this north shore estate with tennis court is perfect for extended families.

The property goes to auction on September 21 and has a price guide of $9 million-$9.5 million.

Art Nouveau beauty in Albert Park, Victoria:

173 Mills Street, Albert Park VIC 3206

This stunning solid brick Federation style residence showcases a blend of period elegance and knock-out contemporary designer style within a zoned floorplan, and an immaculate pool in garden surrounds.

Apparently, while there are (no doubt) glorious decorative ceilings, exquisite leadlight windows, timber fretwork and oak floors, their wonderful original charm is not illustrated in the sales listing, just the stylish dark renovation, a makeover of the previous pale look.

Toorak Gardens Federation home with an award-winning renovation:

“Alexandra House” 103 Alexandra Avenue, Toorak Gardens SA

This Adelaide eastern suburbs Federation Queen Anne home has been given a huge renovation, including an enclosed 25m indoor lap pool and the cellar, which is more like a tasting room.

  • “Alexandra House” is an original 1900 Return Verandah Villa, stripped bare and renovated with elegance and entertainment value, paired with contemporary living and extensive family accommodation.

  • NB KATE FARRELLY, DOMAIN REPORTER - SEPT 11, 2019 reported that this house was in Toorak, Victoria, but no, it is in Toorak GARDENS, South Australia

Built around 1900, this prestigious Queen Anne Villa on a stunning inner eastern suburbs tree-lined street has retained its Federation frontage but selling agent Tim Threadgold says the interior is more like that of a new home.

“This has been completely pulled apart from front to back.

“I would go so far as to say it’s getting close to a brand-new home with beautiful (original) stonework and walls. Everything is updated with new materials.”

The lap pool has been enclosed for year-round swimming:
